Do not attempt to apply epoxy to existing concrete sealants. These must be removed first, as the epoxy will not stick to them. In addition, floor paint is not a good base for epoxy and must also be removed. You can paint or apply epoxy over an existing epoxy floor, but you must first sand and prepare the floor for the paint to adhere.
Unless you're working in a small area, it's easier to peel the epoxy floor and start from scratch.
As long as the existing garage floor covering is a 2-part resinous product, such as epoxy, polyurea, polyaspartic, or polyurethane, then you should be able to do so. The best coating you can apply to your garage floor will be a premium multi-layer epoxy system.
Coated garage floors require less maintenance. That's why it's worth investing in a resilient floor covering in more ways than one.
A normal installation on a garage floor requires 5 to 8 hours, normally spread over 2 days, depending on the job and the specific conditions. You can safely walk in 12 hours, and we recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before driving through it (depending on the outside temperature).
A durable floor will require at least two layers of epoxy, which must be cured overnight between layers. Once the last coat has been applied, it's best to wait at least three days before allowing the vehicle to enter the garage; complete cure can take up to two weeks.
